We’ve written before about why we love Manchester so much. But, of course, it’s not just about the city itself: it’s about the city as a business centre. So what makes Manchester such a great place to build a company?
Great transport links
Businesses rely on being able to get around, and Manchester has everything you’ll need. The city’s airport is the third largest in the UK (just behind Gatwick and Heathrow) and serves 220 destinations each day. If you prefer to go by road, the M60 circles Manchester and offers excellent access to the rest of the country. Prefer rail? You can be in London in just over two hours.
Great office space
We’re obviously a bit biased here, but Manchester’s wealth of commercial property is seriously impressive. BBC’s Salford City development is just one example of the quality of business space being developed in the area. Whatever your line of work, you’ll be able to find the ideal base for it in our city.
We’ve mentioned Manchester’s educational prowess before, but it’s worth re-iterating. There are three major universities in the city – the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford – as well as two others. The city boasts a student population of over 100,000, so you can be sure of picking out the very best in up-and-coming talent.
Digital and creative
Manchester is fast developing a reputation for being the biggest digital and creative hub outside of London, with MediaCity again a great example. There are a number of creative communities working in Manchester, and in 2014 the city was selected as the third EU-backed Business & IP Centre outside of London. What’s more, the Manchester Airport City Enterprise Zone is set to be complete within the next eight to ten years.
Grants and funding
There are multiple investment and loan funds available in the Manchester area, so if you want to accelerate your company’s growth, our city is a great place to do it. The evergreen £155m North West Fund is widely considered the most prolific VC investor in Britain, and the Greater Manchester Investment Fund (GMIF) is another great example.
