Although property prices continue to rise in and around Manchester, the actual size of new build homes gets smaller and smaller. Compared to just a decade ago, the size of the average new-build home in the UK has shrunk by around two metres – that’s the size of a broom cupboard or cloakroom. Commenting on a report by financial services firm LV into the size of homes in the UK, published earlier this year, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) says it is concerned about the trend for smaller houses, and the impact this has on families and their living conditions.
The report found that around 150,000 children have a bedroom that has been partitioned in half to create another room, or bedroom. They also cite a chronic lack of storage space as a real problem for many households. The average family home – semi-detached, three bedrooms – reduced from 98.8 square metres in 2003, to 96.8 square metres in 2013. Consumers are paying more but are getting less it seems, as housebuilders try and maximise profits by constructing smaller homes. New houses in Ireland are 15% bigger than in the UK; in the Netherlands it’s 53%, and in Denmark, a whopping 80%!
The report reveals how one couple keep their vacuum cleaner at a relative’s home because they don’t have enough storage space, and face a half hour drive every time the want to use it at home. Other people said they stored things in their car, including supermarket offers such as buy one get one free. A number of people interviewed said they had no storage space for sentimental items, such as a wedding dress or toys from their own childhood – even storing the Christmas tree was a problem!
While Manchester-based storage company www.flexispace.com may not be able to help you find a bigger house, they can help with your storage problem, either for the short or long term. Whatever you need to store, for business or personal items, it’s worth speaking to one of their friendly staff and see how they can help. They are close to the city centre and will be delighted to discuss the storage facilities they offer, without obligation.
