I recall the moment well. My wife had that sadly resigned look and the kids half-hid behind her with anxious expressions on their faces. “Right” I said, much more boldly than I felt, “I am going in. I may be some time”. With a slight tremor in my hands I opened the door slowly. I was about to venture into the “Spare Room”. Turning back for a last show of support I discovered that they had all gone off to watch “Britain’s Got Talent”. I truly was on my own…
I hadn’t intended to climb the Christmas tree on the way to digging out our camping gear for the weekend away. I was glad there were no witnesses because, not only was it painful, but I could hear the voice in my head: “Well we’ve solved the problem of what goes on top of the tree for this year”.
As my quest continued I casually wondered how many large, empty suitcases one four-person family actually needed and whether they might be combined into some kind of climbing frame. Then, just as I spied my target in a cobweb-strewn corner, disaster struck. To be fair, many inexperienced people do suffer skiing injuries. Although probably not usually by spraining an ankle falling over discarded boots in their spare room.
The crashing noise and my agonised squeals brought the family rushing to my rescue. Well, as soon as the next ad break arrived.
The children tried not to laugh and my wife simply shook her head sadly as I slowly staggered to my feet. Then she hit me with the JATND bombshell – and not for the first time. “John And Trudy Next Door…” This was a phrase she used when about to tell me what to do (I actually like our neighbours – well almost).
So apparently like them I was persuaded, in a “here are your instructions kind of way” to go and rent a self storage unit. I was relieved that my dear wife didn’t intend to keep me there. I have to admit that it does offer a great solution to allow both a clutter-free home and keep our non-urgent belongings clean, dry and safe from theft or damage. I’m actually glad I thought of it.
The spare room is now my comfy little personal haven from TV talent shows and my beloved family!
