There is an eternal – and universal – search for ways to raise a bit of extra cash. But if you live in the Manchester area, the answer could be rubbish. Well, not actually trash, just unwanted, redundant or less-than-perfect “stuff”.
Recycling is big business these days. Taking items and finding new value or purpose, then selling them on. So here are three of the main ways of making extra cash in Manchester from this trend.
If you have a particular interest, hobby or skill, this could be a great time to rent workspace in the Manchester area and turn it into a money spinner.
Repairing broken jewellery or watches for example. Bicycle repairs. Furniture restoration. Sewing alterations. Computer repairs are also big business for budding entrepreneurs and all you need is a low-cost, high-security workshop.
You could also take other people’s junk and clean it up, transforming it into something completely different. Check out some of Manchester city centre’s trendy restaurants. You can find all sorts of repurposed bits and bots hanging as decorations. Old bicycle frames are as “in” as wall art.
Homeowners use suitcases, crates and barrels hung on walls as cupboards or shelves, or on the floor as coffee tables. Planters for gardens and patios can be made from old boots, wellies, chipped teapots or old kettles, for example. Pianos become tables, garden features or even shelving by skimming off the top portion. The list is vast and there are loads of great ideas on the internet.
Sort it and sell it
You would have to live in a cave not to know about eBay and other selling sites for “pre-loved” items. However, it’s worth doing some research into the many outlets there are these days to make money from stuff you no longer need. CDs, DVDs, books, old phones, broken jewellery and watches, for example.
Some places in Manchester buy clothes by weight and there are shops in the area where you can sell off your designer gear and high-value togs such as wedding dresses and suits. Online sites and car boots are a great place to sell off any of your products from the restoration work you do in your rented workspace too.
There are loads of car boot sales in the Manchester area. One of the most highly recommended is Bowlers every Sunday.
Space to start making money
One of the biggest obstacles to sorting through, cleaning, repairing and repurposing items ready to sell is space.
You can rent self-storage lockers and workspace in Manchester for reasonable fees to give you both the necessary space and time to get maximum cash from your unwanted items.
